Quick Answer

ATF, CVT fluid and DCT fluid are not three quality levels of the same product. They are different fluid families designed around different transmission architectures, friction systems and hydraulic controls. An importer should build the range from verified vehicle applications and required specifications, then decide where a multi-vehicle product can safely reduce SKU count. Never replace CVT or DCT fluid with a conventional ATF merely because the viscosity looks similar.[1] [2] [3]

Start with transmission architecture, not the word “automatic”

A vehicle described as “automatic” may use a torque-converter stepped automatic transmission, a belt or chain CVT, a wet dual-clutch transmission, a dry DCT, a hybrid e-CVT or a dedicated hybrid transmission. These systems can appear in the same vehicle segment while requiring fundamentally different fluids.

In a conventional stepped AT, the fluid normally works as a hydraulic medium, lubricant, coolant and carefully controlled friction material for clutches and bands. In a belt or chain CVT, the fluid must also support the contact and friction behaviour of pulleys, belts or chains while controlling shudder. In a DCT, the fluid may serve gears, synchronizers, hydraulic controls and wet clutches; some dry-clutch designs separate the clutch from the gearbox lubricant. The name on the vehicle’s sales brochure is therefore not enough for fluid approval.

Official service information illustrates the boundary. Ford tells owners to use the defined specification and viscosity grade and, for the cited application, to use MERCON LV only. Honda’s description of a conventional CVT shows hydraulic pulley control and a metal belt—hardware that is different from a stepped AT.[1] [2]

The ZF TE-ML 11 list places passenger-car manual transmissions, DCTs and automatic transmissions within one reference system but separates them by transmission and lubricant class. It also lists approved trade products by application. This is a useful reminder that a broad standard name is not a universal approval.[3] [4]

The five pieces of vehicle data to collect before recommending fluid

  1. VIN or complete vehicle identity: brand, model, model year, engine and market version.
  2. Transmission code or family: not simply the number of speeds.
  3. Required fluid specification or part number: copied from the owner’s manual, service information or a reliable application database.
  4. Service procedure: drain-and-fill quantity, total capacity, temperature-based level check, filter/pan requirements and whether specialist equipment is needed.
  5. Operating context: climate, towing, taxi or fleet duty, workshop capability and expected service interval.

For B2B supply, this data should be recorded against the SKU in the distributor’s application guide. A salesperson should be able to say “application not confirmed” instead of improvising a substitution. That discipline protects the workshop, vehicle owner, importer and brand.

Building the ATF range: broad coverage still needs boundaries

A practical ATF range often needs more than one product. Older four- and five-speed units may call for DEXRON III-, DEXRON II- or MERCON-type performance. Many later transmissions use lower-viscosity fluids such as DEXRON VI-, Toyota WS-, Honda DW-1-, Nissan Matic S- or Hyundai/Kia SP-IV-type requirements. Some newer units have narrower OEM-specific requirements.

KATMOTO ATF MULTI is positioned as a multi-vehicle low-viscosity ATF for selected Asian, American and European applications where compatibility is confirmed. It can help a distributor reduce inventory, but “multi-vehicle” must not be read as “every automatic transmission.” It is explicitly outside CVT, DCT, e-CVT and DHT applications unless the vehicle maker confirms otherwise.[5]

For a narrower application, KATMOTO ATF M9G is designed for MB 236.17-type 9G-Tronic/NAG3 applications. Its own application notice excludes older Mercedes-Benz fluid requirements and general DEXRON/MERCON use. This is exactly why an importer should not build the range by viscosity alone.[6]

CVT fluid: conventional CVT is not hybrid e-CVT

Conventional CVT fluid is developed for selected belt and chain CVT systems. The fluid’s friction behaviour is tied to the way the belt or chain transfers torque through the pulleys, while the hydraulic system controls clamping force and ratio changes. Using an ordinary ATF may create shudder, slip, wear or drivability problems even if the two fluids have similar colour or measured viscosity.

KATMOTO CVT FLUID targets selected Toyota CVT FE/TC-type, Honda HCF-2-type, Nissan NS-2/NS-3-type and similar applications where compatibility is confirmed. The product page also states that it is not for stepped AT, DCT, manual transmission, hybrid e-CVT or DHT unless specifically permitted.[7]

The term e-CVT deserves particular care. Many hybrid e-CVTs use motors, gears and power-split elements rather than a belt-and-pulley CVT. They belong in a separate application discussion; the presence of “CVT” in both names is not evidence that the fluids are interchangeable.

DCT fluid: confirm wet or dry architecture and the fluid number

A wet DCT typically places its clutch packs in fluid, so friction durability and heat control are central. A dry DCT keeps the clutch dry, but the gearbox and mechatronic arrangement may still require a dedicated fluid or more than one service product. Importers should never promise that one DCT fluid covers all DSG, S-tronic, Powershift or other branded systems.

KATMOTO DCT FLUID is developed for selected DCT applications where compatibility is confirmed. The product information instructs users to follow the OEM fluid number and service manual and excludes conventional AT, CVT, e-CVT and manual gearboxes unless specified.[8]

Start with the transmissions actually serviced in the market, not the largest possible cross-reference sheet. Track rejected fitment requests and lost sales for three to six months. That data shows whether the next SKU should be another OEM-specific ATF, a second CVT family or a dedicated hybrid fluid.

Documents and label claims to verify before the purchase order

Request the current TDS and SDS for the exact formulation and packaging being quoted. The TDS should identify the product family, key physical properties, application statements and exclusions. The SDS supports transport, storage, workplace and emergency planning; it does not prove transmission compatibility.

If a label uses an OEM trademark, approval number or wording such as “approved,” ask for the valid authorization and verify it through the relevant official list when available. ZF publishes current lubricant lists with lubricant classes and approved trade products. A statement such as “suitable for use in” or “meets the performance requirements of” is different from appearing on an OEM approval list.[3] [4]

Before artwork approval, align the quotation, TDS, SDS, label, carton and commercial invoice. They should use the same product name, specification language, pack size and importer details. Also agree batch coding, retained samples, leakage testing, cap/closure checks and pre-shipment inspection.

Common purchasing mistakes

  • Buying by colour: red, amber or another colour is not a compatibility standard.
  • Comparing viscosity only: friction behaviour and hardware application matter as much as viscosity.
  • Treating “multi-vehicle” as universal: every broad-coverage ATF still has exclusions.
  • Confusing CVT with e-CVT: the transmission architectures may be completely different.
  • Assuming all DCTs share one fluid: wet/dry design, mechatronics and OEM fluid numbers vary.
  • Printing approval language without evidence: “meets,” “suitable for use” and “officially approved” are not interchangeable claims.

  1. Map the top transmission families, vehicle years and monthly workshop demand.
  2. Separate stepped AT, CVT, DCT, e-CVT and DHT applications.
  3. Request an application list with explicit exclusions for every SKU.
  4. Review the exact TDS, SDS and any claimed approval evidence.
  5. Check the destination-market label language, importer details and transport requirements.
  6. Approve 1L/4L or other pack sizes according to workshop and retail turnover.
  7. Agree samples, batch coding, carton marks, leakage checks and pre-shipment inspection.
  8. Train sales staff to stop and verify when a transmission is not listed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ATF be used in a CVT?

Only when the vehicle manufacturer explicitly specifies that ATF for the exact CVT. Conventional belt/chain CVTs normally require a dedicated CVT fluid; never substitute by colour or viscosity alone.

Can CVT fluid be used in a hybrid e-CVT?

Not automatically. Many hybrid e-CVTs do not use a belt-and-pulley architecture. Match the exact hybrid transaxle and required fluid.

Is DCT fluid the same as manual transmission oil?

No. A DCT can combine gears, synchronizers, hydraulic controls and wet clutches. Use the fluid number specified for the particular DCT.

Does multi-vehicle ATF replace every OEM ATF?

No. It can simplify stock only within its verified application list. OEM-specific and unlisted transmissions require separate confirmation.

Does “meets MB 236.17-type performance” mean official Mercedes-Benz approval?

No. A performance or suitability statement is not the same as official approval. Approval must be supported by valid OEM evidence.

Which pack sizes should an importer start with?

Use channel demand. One-litre packs support service top-up and retail; four-litre packs suit many workshop jobs. Larger packs need controlled dispensing, traceability and sufficient turnover.

What documents should accompany a transmission-fluid quotation?

At minimum, request the current TDS, SDS, application list, exclusions, label draft, pack specification and any evidence behind licensing or approval claims.
