Start with the vehicle manufacturer’s specified viscosity. Under the current ILSAC system, GF-7B applies only to SAE 0W-16, while GF-7A covers mainstream grades including 0W-20. Importers should keep the two grades as separate SKUs, verify every API licence claim for the exact marketer, brand, viscosity and category, and base inventory on local vehicle demand rather than general popularity.[1] [2]

<details class="katmoto-toc" open>

Table of Contents

Why 0W-16 and 0W-20 must remain separate SKUs

0W-16 vs 0W-20 comparison

What the 0W and second number mean

GF-7A, GF-7B and API SQ

Vehicle application and substitution boundaries

Distributor stocking workflow

Documents and label checks

Common purchasing mistakes

B2B RFQ checklist

Frequently Asked Questions

Sources & References

</details>

Why 0W-16 and 0W-20 must remain separate SKUs

For a distributor, the risk is not that the two cans look similar. The risk is that a sales team treats “low-viscosity gasoline engine oil” as one application. SAE 0W-16 and SAE 0W-20 have different high-temperature viscosity classifications under SAE J300. J300 classifies oils in rheological terms; it does not itself certify engine performance, API licensing or vehicle suitability.[3]

A viscosity grade answers one part of the specification. API, ILSAC and any vehicle-maker requirement answer other parts. KATMOTO lists K9 ECO 0W-16 for gasoline and hybrid applications requiring SAE 0W-16 and K9 ECO 0W-20 for modern gasoline and hybrid applications requiring SAE 0W-20.[6] [7] The importer still has to map each SKU to the intended vehicle population.

0W-16 vs 0W-20 comparison

Buyer check

SAE 0W-16

SAE 0W-20

Procurement implication

ILSAC GF-7 route

GF-7B

GF-7A

Do not copy the same ILSAC mark or wording across both labels

API certification mark associated with the ILSAC claim

Shield

Starburst

Verify the live licence for the exact marketer, brand, grade and category

Primary application rule

Where the vehicle maker specifies or permits 0W-16

Where the vehicle maker specifies or permits 0W-20

Build fitment data from manuals and controlled sources

Substitution

Only when a specific manual allows it

Not an automatic replacement for 0W-16 or thicker grades

Publish only the OEM rule for that vehicle

Stocking role

Targeted ultra-low-viscosity SKU

Broader mainstream low-viscosity SKU in many markets

Set inventory from local parc and channel demand

What the 0W and second number mean

The 0W portion relates to low-temperature cranking and pumping requirements within the SAE viscosity classification. It does not mean all 0W oils behave identically at operating temperature. The second number separates the SAE 16 and SAE 20 high-temperature grades.

SAE J300 does not evaluate deposit control, wear, LSPI, fuel economy or OEM approval. “0W-16 is just a thinner 0W-20” is therefore not a safe buying rule. The formulation must support the claimed performance programme, and the engine must be designed or approved for that viscosity.

GF-7A, GF-7B and API SQ

API states that ILSAC GF-7A and GF-7B became effective on March 31, 2025. The programme addresses areas including fresh and aged-oil LSPI, timing-chain wear, high-temperature deposits, sludge and varnish control, fuel economy, emission-system protection, low-temperature pumpability and operation with ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.[1] [2]

GF-7B applies only to SAE 0W-16 and uses the API Shield certification route. GF-7A uses the Starburst route for mainstream ILSAC grades, including 0W-20. API SQ is a service category, not a viscosity. API SQ with Resource Conserving corresponds to GF-7A when the complete programme requirements are met.

“Meets API SQ performance requirements” is not the same as “API licensed.” Before artwork approval, verify the current directory entry for the exact marketer, brand, grade and category, and retain dated evidence.

Vehicle application and substitution boundaries

The owner’s manual comes before a general comparison chart. Toyota’s official guide for a 0W-16-certified Corolla Hatchback permits 0W-20 mineral oil when 0W-16 is unavailable, but applies a shorter service interval and requires a return to 0W-16.[4] This is a model-specific fallback, not a universal interchange rule.

Honda documentation shows the same principle from another angle: some applications specify 0W-20, while another official page allows 0W-16 or 0W-20.[5] The allowed choice belongs to the named vehicle and manual.
