CCS addresses cold-cranking behavior; MRV evaluates low-temperature apparent viscosity and yield stress relevant to pumping. A low pour point does not replace either. Before importing a winter-grade engine oil, connect the claimed SAE grade to the correct test conditions and the engine’s complete oil requirement. Then establish what the supplier’s data actually represent. [1][2][3]

On this page

First, separate starting from pumping

Why pour point is not a winter-grade shortcut

Read a product example without turning it into a promise

What belongs in the supplier RFQ

Keep the report, carton and shipment tied together

A missing result should pause a decision, not create a guess

A practical release sequence

Frequently Asked Questions

Sources & References

First, separate starting from pumping

A winter-oil quotation can look reassuring: a familiar SAE grade, a low pour point and a sentence about easy cold starts. For an importer, the unanswered question is more practical. Which evidence supports the grade, and does that evidence belong to the product being quoted? A neat specification table is useful only when its entries mean what the buyer thinks they mean.

CCS, commonly reported with ASTM D5293, is associated with engine cranking at low temperature. It is not a substitute for evidence about oil flow to the pump. MRV, associated with ASTM D4684, considers apparent viscosity and yield stress after controlled cooling. The two methods answer different questions. [2][3]

Keep that distinction in the purchasing file. Record the actual method, test temperature, unit and sample identity beside each result. A number followed only by ‘cold viscosity’ is incomplete. The buyer should not have to guess whether it is CCS, MRV or another measurement, or whether the temperature was selected for the claimed grade.

Nor is one result a complete vehicle recommendation. SAE J300 is a viscosity classification, not an approval for every engine that uses the same front-label grade. The required performance specification and any manufacturer-specific condition still matter. A winter-grade review should resolve part of the application file, not overwrite the rest of it. [1]

Three entries that should not be merged into ‘cold flow’

Entry

Relevant method

Question it helps address

What to request

CCS apparent viscosity

ASTM D5293

Low-temperature cranking behavior

Result, temperature, unit, actual method and product identity

MRV apparent viscosity and yield stress

ASTM D4684

Low-temperature pumping-related behavior

Complete reported fields and the relevant test conditions

Pour point

ASTM D97 or the actual reported method

Pour-point behavior under that method

Do not substitute this entry for CCS or MRV evidence

Why pour point is not a winter-grade shortcut

Pour point is a useful property, but it is not the same measurement as CCS or MRV. ASTM D97 addresses pour point; ASTM D5293 and D4684 address different low-temperature behavior. Treating the lowest temperature printed in a TDS as proof of the winter grade skips the evidence the buyer actually needs. [2][3][4]

An informal freezer demonstration does not repair that gap. Watching oil move in a chilled bottle is not a documented CCS or MRV result. Neither is a video of an engine starting a controlled comparison between formulations. Such material may illustrate a product, but it should not be turned into a specification claim or a promise about a customer’s engine.

Ask a narrower question: what test information supports this exact winter-grade claim? For a close comparison, agree the relevant method and conditions before comparing figures. A smaller reported number at one temperature cannot be ranked against a larger number at another temperature without a sound technical basis. Keep marketing descriptions out of that calculation.

Read a product example without turning it into a promise

KATMOTO K9 ECO 0W-20 provides a concrete example of how to read a public product table. Its page lists CCS at −35°C as 5,400 mPa·s and MRV at −40°C as 11,500 mPa·s under the heading ‘Target Typical Value’. These are published target typical figures, not independently verified batch test results in this guide. [6]

For an actual inquiry, request the current product-specific TDS and clarify the status of those figures. Is a value representative information, a controlled release limit or an agreed contractual requirement? Those are different statements. A distributor should not convert a typical value into a guaranteed number on a quotation or local-language label without the supplier’s explicit agreement.

The public MRV row is a viscosity entry. Do not silently add a yield-stress conclusion that the table does not state. If that information is required for the technical review, request the supporting report and its complete reported fields. Equally, a suitable numerical entry does not by itself establish every requirement of the claimed SAE grade or performance category.

The same discipline applies to approvals. An SAE grade, performance wording and an official license are not interchangeable evidence. Verify a required approval or license separately for the exact product; API’s licensing program is distinct from reading a viscosity figure. This article does not certify KATMOTO licensing or OEM approval. [1][5]

What belongs in the supplier RFQ

Begin with the intended engines and their stated oil requirements. Then describe the operating context your customer needs reviewed. ‘For a cold country’ is not enough to identify an application. Nor should a laboratory test temperature be presented as a universal lowest ambient temperature for every vehicle using that oil.

Request the full claimed SAE grade, current technical documents and the relevant low-temperature evidence. The report should identify the product or formulation, sample, method and conditions. Ask whether the supplied product is the same version covered by the supporting documents, and who will notify you if that relationship changes.

You do not have to invent a testing regime for every shipment. Where independent testing or batch acceptance is part of the purchase, agree sampling, laboratory responsibilities, limits and the treatment of disputed results beforehand. Do not assume that every COA routinely contains CCS, MRV and every other performance test; ask what the supplier can actually provide.

Commercial details belong in the same inquiry, but remain subject to confirmation. State pack formats, estimated volume, destination market and document languages. Ask for the applicable MOQ, availability and lead time rather than copying a general promise from an article. The technical shortlist and the commercial offer should refer to the same identifiable SKU.

A purchasing file that keeps the grade claim traceable

Confirm

Include in the request

Decision to record

Application

Exact engine and vehicle-manufacturer oil requirement

No substitution based only on the winter prefix

Technical evidence

CCS/MRV method, temperature, unit, sample and document revision

Compare on an agreed technical basis

Value status

Typical figures versus controlled or contractual limits

No unagreed batch guarantee

Claim status

Any required product-specific license or approval evidence

Verification separate from viscosity data

Shipment identity

SKU, pack labels and available lot records

A traceable match between order, product and documents

Keep the report, carton and shipment tied together

A sound technical choice can still become a receiving problem if similar packs lose their identity. Put the product code, viscosity grade and agreed document revision on the purchase file. At receipt, reconcile the order, carton labels and available lot records before releasing the shipment into the normal picking location.

The photograph below shows KATMOTO cartons marked 5W-40 on wrapped pallets. It is a different grade from the K9 ECO 0W-20 example, included to illustrate packaging identification. It is not a photograph of a CCS or MRV test, and it does not establish factory ownership, current stock or the low-temperature performance of the cartons shown.

Where a label and a report appear inconsistent, keep the question open until the supplier resolves it. An importer should not improvise a substitute application simply because the packaging looks familiar. A documented identity check is usually more useful at this stage than another generic assurance that the oil is synthetic.

KATMOTO packaging identification in a pallet photograph; cartons show another grade, 5W-40. This image is not evidence of CCS/MRV performance, factory ownership or current stock.

A missing result should pause a decision, not create a guess

A TDS without a CCS or MRV entry does not automatically prove that the oil is unsuitable. It does leave an evidence gap if those results are needed for your review. Ask whether supporting information is available and what product it covers. The absence of a public row and the absence of technical evidence are not necessarily the same thing.

If the answer is still unclear, retain the oil as a candidate rather than release it for an unverified application. Avoid replacing missing data with a claimed percentage improvement, a pour-point comparison or the word ‘premium’. None tells a workshop why a specific product is appropriate for a specific engine.

For the separate question of hot-temperature viscosity, use the HTHS and kinematic-viscosity guide linked below. Keeping the cold and hot measurement questions distinct makes the product file easier to explain, especially when distributors compare several oils with similar names.

A practical release sequence

Identify the engines, full oil specification and application question before shortlisting a grade.

Read the current TDS without merging CCS, MRV and pour point into one property.

Resolve missing methods, temperatures, sample identity and the status of reported values.

Agree any testing, acceptance limits and exception-handling process in writing.

Match the approved product file to the quotation, SKU, labels and received shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are CCS and MRV the same test?

No. They address different low-temperature behavior. The lowest number is not a universal application recommendation.

Is a published typical value a batch guarantee?

Only if the supplier explicitly agrees that status.
