It changes how the product is blended, labelled, stored, sold and supported after it reaches the market. A concentrate may give a distributor more flexibility, while a ready-to-use coolant reduces dilution errors and gives workshops a simpler service product. Neither format is automatically the better purchase.

The practical decision starts with three questions: Which vehicles will the coolant serve? What freeze protection does the market require? And who will control the water and mixing ratio? This guide explains how to compare the two formats, how ASTM D3306 fits into a passenger-car coolant specification, and what documents and label details a buyer should review before confirming an order.

KATMOTO bulk packaging for automotive fluids. Coolant format, pack size and local filling plans should be agreed before quotation.

Concentrate and premix solve different supply-chain problems

A coolant concentrate is designed to be diluted with water before use. A premixed or ready-to-use coolant already contains the intended water-to-concentrate ratio and should normally be installed as supplied. The difference sounds straightforward, but it affects much more than the liquid in the pack.

Concentrate can suit importers that have reliable local blending or filling capability, sell to professional workshops accustomed to dilution, or need one product to cover several climate zones. It may also reduce the amount of water transported. The trade-off is responsibility: water quality, measuring accuracy, mixing equipment, batch traceability and the final label all need to be controlled.

Premix suits markets where convenience, consistent freeze protection and lower service risk matter most. It is easier to explain at the counter and harder for a workshop to dilute incorrectly. However, the importer is transporting water, and each freeze-point grade becomes a separate SKU. That can increase warehouse complexity if the region needs several protection levels.

Quick commercial comparison

Buying factor

Coolant concentrate

Premixed / ready-to-use coolant

Final preparation

Must be diluted correctly before filling

Normally used as supplied

Water quality control

Importer, blender or workshop controls the water

Controlled during manufacture

Climate flexibility

One concentrate can support different approved ratios

Each freeze-point grade is a defined SKU

Service-error risk

Higher if instructions or measuring are weak

Lower because no dilution is required

Freight and local value-add

Less water shipped; local blending may be possible

Simpler downstream handling but more finished volume shipped

Label priority

Dilution table, water requirement and warnings

“Ready to use,” freeze point and no-dilution instruction

Start with the vehicle specification, not coolant colour

Colour is a marketing and identification choice; it is not a universal chemistry standard. Two coolants of the same colour may use different inhibitor systems, while two products of different colours may target similar applications. A buyer should therefore begin with the vehicle manufacturer’s required coolant specification, chemistry restrictions and service instructions.

Ask whether the target fleet requires conventional inorganic technology, organic acid technology (OAT), hybrid organic acid technology (HOAT), a low-conductivity EV coolant, or a named OEM specification. Also confirm whether the application is passenger car/light duty, heavy duty or an electrified thermal-management circuit. A product selected for one group should not be assumed suitable for another.

KATMOTO’s Long Life Coolant −35°C and Super Long Life Coolant −50°C are ready-to-use products for passenger-car and light-vehicle cooling systems. The EV-LC 100 is a separate low-conductivity, ready-to-use coolant for EV/PHEV thermal-management systems. These examples show why “coolant” is not one interchangeable product category.

What ASTM D3306 tells an importer—and what it does not

ASTM D3306-21[1] is the active ASTM specification for glycol-base engine coolants intended for automobiles and other light-duty service. Its scope covers coolant concentrates and prediluted coolants. For concentrates, the standard anticipates use at defined volume concentrations; for prediluted products, it addresses products supplied with a stated glycol content.

That makes ASTM D3306 a useful technical reference when comparing passenger-car coolants. It does not, by itself, prove that a particular product has been tested by an independent laboratory, licensed by an OEM, accepted by a regulator, or approved for every vehicle in the market. A supplier statement such as “meets the performance requirements of ASTM D3306” should be supported by the relevant TDS and test evidence. It should not be rewritten on an importer’s label as “OEM approved” unless a valid approval exists.

Heavy-duty fleets need a different review. ASTM itself points users toward specifications such as ASTM D4985 and ASTM D6210 for heavy-duty applications. Importers should not use a passenger-car D3306 claim as a substitute for a heavy-duty coolant requirement.

Water quality is part of the product when buying concentrate

The water used for dilution can influence corrosion protection, scale formation and product stability. Hard water can bring calcium and magnesium; unsuitable water can also introduce chloride, sulfate or other contaminants. If an importer plans to dilute or repack concentrate locally, “use clean water” is not a sufficient production instruction.

Before ordering concentrate, agree in writing on the water-quality limits, approved dilution range, mixing procedure and test method for checking the finished batch. Define who releases the batch and which records will be retained. If dilution happens at workshop level, the pack needs a clear mixing table and the distributor should decide whether technicians realistically have access to suitable water and measuring equipment.

More concentrate is not always better. An excessively rich mixture may transfer heat less effectively and may not deliver the expected freeze protection. The correct ratio is the ratio specified by the coolant supplier and the vehicle manufacturer—not a rule invented at the service counter.

Build the SKU plan around climate and customer behaviour

A national distributor may serve coastal cities, high-altitude regions and severe-winter markets from one warehouse. Concentrate can offer flexibility in such a network, but only if the downstream mixing process is controlled. Premix gives each region an unambiguous freeze-point grade, which is often preferable for retail and independent workshops.

Review actual winter temperatures, the vehicle parc, pack-size demand and sell-through by channel. A −35°C product and a −50°C product should not be treated as cosmetic variants. They occupy different climate positions and require clear inventory naming. For tropical markets, freeze protection is not the only reason to use coolant: boiling protection, corrosion control and material compatibility remain essential. Do not market tap water as a safe substitute.

Label details buyers should settle before artwork approval

Coolant labels must work for customs, distributors, technicians and vehicle owners. Requirements differ by destination, so local legal review remains necessary. As a commercial minimum, the buyer should verify:

For ethylene-glycol handling and exposure statements, align the destination-market label and SDS with recognized hazard information such as the CDC/NIOSH chemical guide.[5]

product identity and whether it is concentrate or ready to use;

base chemistry and the supported vehicle/application category;

freeze-point grade or approved dilution table;

a clear instruction not to add water to premix;

mixing, flushing and top-up cautions, including incompatibility warnings;

referenced performance specifications stated with accurate wording;

net content, batch code, production or filling information and shelf-life marking where required;

supplier/importer identity, country-of-origin marking and local-language information;

safe handling, storage and disposal statements consistent with the SDS.

Keep “meets performance requirements,” “suitable for use” and “officially approved/licensed” as separate claims. Procurement teams should ask for the evidence behind each phrase before it reaches the artwork.

Documents to request before the purchase order

A professional quotation should be followed by a document review, not only a price comparison. Request the current Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the exact grade and formulation. Confirm that the product name, freeze point, format and pack size match across the quotation, TDS, SDS, label and commercial invoice.

Where a performance standard is claimed, request a declaration or relevant test report and check which formulation and production source it covers. For private-label work, approve the master artwork, barcode responsibility, batch-code format, carton marks and retention sample procedure. If local filling is planned, add the concentrate specification, water specification, finished-product test limits and traceability responsibilities to the quality agreement.

Importer coolant buying checklist

List the vehicle types, model requirements and climate zones.

Choose concentrate, premix or a channel-specific combination.

Confirm chemistry, freeze point and referenced performance standard.

Review TDS, SDS and supporting test evidence for the exact product.

Agree water quality and mixing controls if concentrate is involved.

Validate destination-market label and dangerous-goods requirements.

Approve packaging, pallet configuration, batch coding and traceability.

Confirm samples and pre-shipment checks before the commercial order.

Common procurement mistakes

Buying by colour. Colour alone does not establish chemistry or compatibility.

Comparing freeze point only. Corrosion tests, materials, water quality, boiling protection and application suitability also matter.

Assuming all “long life” products are equivalent. The phrase is not a universal specification; review the actual performance claim and service guidance.

Using an EV coolant claim for every electrified vehicle. Hybrid engines, battery circuits and power electronics may have different fluid requirements.

Approving artwork before documents. Claims are harder and more expensive to correct after labels are printed.

Frequently asked questions

Is coolant concentrate cheaper to import than premix?

It can reduce the volume of water transported, but total landed cost must include local water treatment, blending, testing, packaging, labour, losses and quality-control responsibility. Premix may be commercially stronger when the market values consistency and workshop convenience.

Can a workshop dilute concentrate with tap water?

Only if the water meets the supplier’s stated quality limits. Because tap-water composition varies, importers should specify acceptable water and recommend deionized or otherwise approved water where required.

Does ASTM D3306 mean the coolant is OEM approved?

No. ASTM D3306 is a performance specification for light-duty glycol-base engine coolants. An OEM approval is a separate claim that requires its own evidence.

Can premixed coolant be diluted further?

Normally it should be used as supplied. Adding water changes the glycol and inhibitor concentration and therefore the stated protection. Follow the product label and vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.

Should importers stock both −35°C and −50°C coolant?

That depends on the coldest operating regions, customer channels and inventory turnover. Separate grades can improve climate fit, but they also require disciplined SKU naming and demand planning.

Sources & References

ASTM International — ASTM D3306-21: Standard Specification for Glycol Base Engine Coolant for Automobile and Light-Duty Service.

KATMOTO — Long Life Coolant −35°C product information.

KATMOTO — Super Long Life Coolant −50°C product information.

KATMOTO — EV-LC 100 product information.

CDC/NIOSH — Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards: Ethylene Glycol.

Discuss a coolant programme with KATMOTO

KATMOTO works with automotive-fluid importers and distributors on product selection, documentation, packaging and market positioning.
